win7 provided no performance difference on any of my systems, and, personally, i dislike it’s changes (the taskbar is a usability failure, the UAC changes are a security failure).
i know win7 has some performance enhancements, none of those translate to higher performances on my systems. i changed them all to ssds, though.
and btw, you should still get an ssd. possibly a photofast v3, they have more storage and higher performance. it helps for all apps and everything.
well…. my PC 2710P boots at same speed, may be even bit faster with windows 7 and 2GB of RAM.
as for applications Vista is very heavy and the performance seems OK, but still i have the same performance with windows 7. try it if you can and post a comparision.
